그날은 제자의 생일이었다.
"너는 생일 선물로 무엇을 원하느냐?" 스승이 말했다.
"제게 뭔가 깨달음을 줄 수 있는 것을요."
스승은 미소를 지었다.
"어디, 말해보렴! 네가 태어났을 때 너는 하늘에서 별처럼
이 세상으로 떨어졌으냐 아니면 나무에서 돋아나는
나뭇잎처럼 이 세상에서 솟아났느냐?"
온종일 그녀는 스승의 그 이상한 질문을 곰곰이 생각했다.
그러더니 갑자기 답을 알았고,
깨달음에 이르게 되었다.
